! TRAPWHAT EXPATS GET WRONG (COMMON TRAP)

Church tax is collected directly through payroll by the state for the Roman Catholic and Evangelical Protestant churches. It costs an extra 8% of your income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, or 9% in other states. If you mention foreign baptism at the Bürgeramt, they will register you and deduct this monthly. You cannot undo this through HR: you have to book a formal appointment at the local court or registry office (Kirchenaustritt).

STEP-BY-STEP ACTION PROTOCOL (4 STEPS)

  1. 1

When filling out your registration form, write 'keine Religion' or '-' if you do not want to be enrolled in German church tax.

  2. 2

If you see 'KiSt' on your pay stub, schedule an appointment for 'Kirchenaustritt' at your local Amtsgericht or Standesamt.

  3. 3

Pay the one-time civil fee (usually 30 to 50 EUR) and get your official exit certificate (Kirchenaustrittsbescheinigung).

  4. 4

Give a copy of the certificate to your payroll department and tax office so they update your ELStAM record.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is church tax calculated and collected in Germany?[FAQ]

Church tax is an additional 8% surcharge on assessed income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg (9% in other federal states), automatically withheld from employee payroll by tax authorities.

Can I terminate church tax deductions simply by notifying HR?[FAQ]

No. German law requires an official civil declaration of exit (Kirchenaustritt) at the local district court (Amtsgericht) or registry office (Standesamt), yielding an official certificate for payroll.
