Kindergeld (Child Benefit Application)

DEADLINE: Within your first 6 months. Back-pay is capped at 6 months retroactive.

Apply for 250 EUR per month per child through the Familienkasse. Parents living in Germany are entitled to child benefits from their first month of residence.

TRAP:Kindergeld is never paid automatically. You have to submit the forms yourself. The Familienkasse only pays up to 6 months of back-pay from the date they receive your application. If you wait 9 months to file, you permanently lose the first 3 months of money.

Kita-Gutschein (Daycare Voucher for Berlin and Hamburg)

DEADLINE: Apply 6 to 9 months before your planned start date.

Apply for your municipal childcare voucher so you can enroll your child in subsidized daycare.

TRAP:Children aged 1 and older have a statutory right to a childcare spot, but actual openings are limited. If you apply late, waitlists can take months. In cities with voucher systems, Kitas cannot accept your child without this official document.

Elterngeld (Parental Benefit Application)

DEADLINE: Submit within 3 months of birth. Retroactive payments are strictly limited to 3 months.

Apply for state parental allowance (65% to 67% of prior net earnings, up to 1,800 EUR per month) after your child is born.

TRAP:Elterngeld only pays up to 3 months in arrears. If you submit your application when your baby is 5 months old, you permanently lose the first 2 months of payments. Some temporary residence permits also do not qualify unless specific work requirements are met.

Bayerisches Familiengeld: Grandfathered Rules for Pre-2025 Children

DEADLINE: Before your child turns 3 years old.

Parents in Bavaria with children born on or before December 31, 2024 can still receive 250 EUR per month during the child's second and third year.

TRAP:Bavaria stopped Familiengeld for children born in 2025 or later. However, children born before January 1, 2025 are still grandfathered in for up to 6,000 EUR in total support. If your child qualifies, you must apply before their third birthday or you forfeit the remaining payments.

Bavarian Daycare Subsidy: 100 EUR Monthly Fee Reduction

Bavaria pays a statutory 100 EUR monthly subsidy directly toward kindergarten fees for children aged 3 and older.

TRAP:Unlike Berlin or Hamburg, daycare in Bavaria is not tuition-free. Fees often range from 250 to 800 EUR per month. However, the state pays an automatic 100 EUR per month contribution once a child turns 3. Some private or parent-run daycares forget to apply this discount on monthly invoices unless reminded.
