GUIDE #01TIME-SENSITIVE
LAW: § 17 Bundesmeldegesetz (BMG)

Anmeldung (City Address Registration)

DEADLINE: Within 14 calendar days of your move-in date.

Register your address at the local Bürgeramt. You need this to get a tax ID, open most bank accounts, and set up health insurance.

TRAP:If your landlord or sublessor refuses to give you a signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, they are probably subletting illegally. Without this document you cannot register your address, leaving you without a tax ID or bank account. Also, pay attention to the religion question on the form: writing Catholic or Protestant will trigger an automatic 8% to 9% church tax on your salary.

LAW: § 18b / § 81 Abs. 4 AufenthG (Fiktionswirkung)

Residence Permit & Work Authorization (Aufenthaltstitel)

DEADLINE: Apply at least 8 to 12 weeks before your entry visa runs out.

Convert your national entry visa into a long-term residence permit (such as a Blue Card or Skilled Worker permit) before your visa expires.

TRAP:If your entry visa expires and you have no written proof of an active application (such as a Fiktionsbescheinigung or an official confirmation email under § 81 AufenthG), your legal right to work stops immediately. HR has to suspend you without pay until your status is resolved.
